The Knole House sculpture was commissioned by Robert and Jane Sackville-West soon after they moved into Knole in 2008. Whilst staying at Knole one weekend in the 1920s, Duncan Grant painted an image of fire for the disused Tudor fireplace on a first floor sitting room. When the Sackville-Wests had the house renovated, they took the opportunity to fill the fireplace in the French library with the Knole sculpture.
